How to Choose the Right Pixel Pitch for Your Project?

01. What's the pixel pitch?

In short, pixel pitch is measured with millimetre, and it is the distance between the center of two adjacent led lamps(aka led beads). Mostly the distance on vertical direction is the same as on horizontal, so many pixel pitch you see is P3.91, P4, P8 etc. For the transparent led display, vertical one and horizontal one are usually different from each other, so we will mark out the direction like P3.9H/P7.8V.

02. How it does the effect on the resolution/visual performance?

With the words and the illustration above, we can see that: the smaller the pixel pitch is, the closer the led lamps are. And it renders visual performance sharper.

Together with the concept of pixel density(usually in pixel/m²), we can have a formula below:

Bigger pixel pitch=lower pixel density=lower resolution

Smaller pixel pitch=higher pixel density=higher resolution

03. What factors should I take into consideration when choosing the pixel pitch?

There is a popular saying about the answer: the viewing distance from screen to audience in meter = the pixel pitch in millimetre. It is true to some extent but we should complete the answer as led display business is fast-changing.

Check the header picture, it is a P7.62 led display(FAB project in 2014), but it doesn’t mean that the audience has to keep a distance of more than 7 meters to enjoy the best visual performance, coz it is a huge screen.

Now we take P1.56 and P3 as example. The price for them is very different. If the audience just a meter away, sure P1.56 can bring fantastic visual performance. But if the audience is 5-6m away,  human eyes can’t pick up the difference between P1.56 and P3 at that distance.

When choosing the pixel pitch, there are 4 main factors to consider, you can just leave this thing to your screen consultant, or check my content below to have a rough idea:

1. Your Budget: listing this on the 1st may look “impolite” but it is the truth. A fine pixel pitch that out of your budget won’t help you grow your business. But we can help make the most of your budget if you would like to talk more with us. 🙂

2: LED Display Size: huge size led display can use bigger pixel pitch, undoubtedly.

3: The Optimal Viewing Distance:  a formula is this: optimal viewing distance in m = pixel pitch in mm/ (0.3~0.8)

E.g., the optimal viewing distance for a P3.91mm LED displayis 4.88-13 meters; audience at 6 meters far will be able to enjoy the LED display clearly; however, those viewing from a long distance such as 15 meters, will have less-satisified but acceptable visual performance. (This example is based on a normal vision.)

4: Installation Environment: for outdoor led display, you can use bigger pixel pitch to save money whereas not sacrificing the visual performance. On the contrary, in indoor enviroment, smaller pixel pitch is more important.
